Guidebook Updates

Below, you’ll find updates to my three guidebooks, corresponding to any notable route developments since the most recent printing or edition of each guide. My most recent re-walking of each route varies (Inglés/Mar 2019, Primitivo 2019, Norte 2021, Podiensis 2022), and so I’m grateful to all walkers for updates from the road. Post a comment below, or click on the linked form on the relevant route’s spreadsheet.

Camino del Norte Updates

Book Updates – April 2024: With a new printing of the guidebook scheduled to come this year, we’ve recently compiled a new set of updates, all available here.

Accommodation Listings: For more detailed information on accommodation options on the Norte, click here for our Camino del Norte Accommodation Spreadsheet (a work in progress!).

Camino del Norte Baggage Transfer: In addition to the service offered by Correos (the Spanish post office) +34 683440022, Trans Vizcaya has reopened, linking together several different local transport services from Irún to Santiago and Finisterre. See their site for specifics, as contact info varies by region.

Additional Route Details

Stage 1: Irún to San Sebastián
  • Clear waymarks now provide an alternative approach to the village of Leko, instead of continuing directly to Pasajes de San Juan. It then follows the river into Pasajes
  • In Pasajes de San Juan, on the river’s west side following the Camino northward towards the lighthouse, it’s possible to visit one of the more interesting sights on the Norte–the Albaola Faktoria, which is a traditional shipyard where the 16th-century San Juan whaling ship, sunk off the Canadian coast in 1565, has been rebuilt and can be visited. It’s a live workshop where you can check out ongoing projects

Stage 3: Zarautz to Deba
  • There is a very small route change prior to Elorriaga, as the Camino now splits from the GR at the playground/park after Zumaia, reconnecting in Elorriaga
  • It is possible to descend to the coast at Basque Coast Geopark, walking (carefully) along the rock strata around the coastline. This is not easy walking, and it might be impractical at high tide, and it requires an ascent using a rope up a rock face (not a rock climb, per se, but might make some uncomfortable). It spares you a significant ascent, though, and is spectacular walking. Read more here
Stage 4: Deba to Markina-Xemein
  • Those interested in a quicker descent to Markina (and with good knees) can spare themselves 1-1.5km by avoiding the waymarked descent and instead taking the next right, following the old Camino approach to Markina
  • The fountain at Collado de Arno is now marked as being unsafe to drink. For what it’s worth, our group drank it and suffered no negative consequences. Make the right choice for you
Stage 6: Gernika to Bilbao
  • The walk between Larrabetzu and Bilbao isn’t great. Here’s an alternative approach (no waymarks, unofficial) that gets you off-road!
  • Albergue Santa Cruz in Bilbao has permanently closed
Stage 7: Bilbao to Pobeña
  • The East Nervión approach to Portugalete now has improved waymarking, especially after passing Akelarre hostel. At certain points, it now turns inland from the river, to get off of the highway (when the shoulder narrows considerably)
Stage 8: Pobeña to Castro-Urdiales
  • Albergue Tu Camino in Ontón has permanently closed
Stage 9: Castro-Urdiales to Laredo
  • The much-discussed and controversial coastal approach from after El Pontarrón de Guriezo to Laredo is a stunning walk, though too strenuous and risky for some. Read more about it here
Stage 10: Laredo to Guemes
Stage 14: Comillas to Colombres
Stage 16: Llanes to Piñeres de Pria
  • A reader recommends Hotel Gavitu in Celorio, particularly outside of peak season when options decline considerably
Stage 24: Llanes to Piñeres de Pria
  • La Casa del Peregrino in Otur has permanently closed
Stage 26: Ribadeo to Lourenzá
  • Vilela’s Albergue de Peregrinos is no longer open year-round. Instead, its opening season is less clear, as it operates now primarily as an over-flow space for Ribadeo’s small albergue, primarily in the summer. Before leaving Ribadeo, make sure to confirm that Vilela’s albergue is operational.
Stage 27: Lourenzá to Gontán-Abadín
  • A shorter, high-elevation alternate route is now waymarked from Mondoñedo to Gontán. The alternate route spans 12.2km (about 4km shorter than the official route), and climbs steeply through the mountainside above Mondoñedo. Note that there are no facilities along the alternate route. (Map via Gronze)
Stage 28 & 29: Gontán-Abadín to Sobrado dos Monxes
  • A new, more direct, alternate route is now waymarked from Baamonde to Sobrado dos Monxes. The alternate route is 32km total (as opposed to the 40km for the route through Miraz), however facilities along the route are limited, with only two places to stop for food along the way–a bar in O Campo da Vila (14.5km from Baamonde) and a restaurant in As Cruces (13km later) (along with a fountain). The alternate route splits off from the official camino near the hamlet of Toar, about 5.2km past Baamonde. (Map via Gronze.)

Camino Primitivo Updates

Book Updates – April 2024: With a new printing of the guidebook scheduled to come this year, we’ve recently compiled a new set of updates (scroll down for the Primitivo), all available here.

Note: For more detailed information on accommodation options on the Primitivo, click here for our Camino Primitivo Accommodation Spreadsheet (a work in progress!).

Stage 2: Pola de Siero to Oviedo
  • In Oviedo, Hotel Albino has closed
Stage 3: Oviedo to Grado
  • New albergue in Paladín, before Grado: Villa Palatina Superior Hostel
Stage 4: Grado to Salas
  • New donativo albergue in San Marcelo, 7km after Grado: Casita Mandala
  • In Santa Eulalia de Dóriga, Albergue/Bar Cá Pacita has closed
  • New accommodation in Casazorrina, before Salas: Alojamiento La Figal de Xugabolos
  • New accommodation in Salas, on the road out of town: Albergue-Hotel Casa Sueño
Stage 5: Salas to Campiello
  • In Tineo, Hostal Don Miguel has closed
  • New donativo albergue in Porciles, before Bodenaya: Albergue Fontenonaya
  • One new albergue in La Espina has opened: Albergue Casa Aladino. Unfortunately, another newer albergue in La Espina, Albergue Buen Camino, has already closed and is up for sale.
Stage 6: Campiello to Berducedo
  • New albergue in Borres: Albergue La Montera
  • The bar in Borres no longer opens at 6am
  • The municipal albergue in Berducedo has reopened.
Stage 7: Berducedo to Grandas de Salime
  • New albergue in Grandas de Salime: Albergue Porta de Grandas
Stage 8: Grandas de Salime to A Fonsagrada (and beyond)
  • Alternate Route skipping A Fonsagrada: Just before reaching A Fonsagrada, there are new waymarkings for an alternate route that entirely bypasses the town of A Fonsagrada, instead leading 12km through the countryside to Hospital de Montouto, where the alternate rejoins the official Camino. The variant diverts from the official route in the last village before A Fonsagrada, turning right across the highway instead of continuing straight along the left side of it. We would advise against this variation, as A Fonsagrada provides pilgrims with the first sizable town of the day since leaving Grandas de Salime.
  • In Fonsagrada, Hotel Spa Fonte Sacra has closed

Camino Inglés Updates

Note: For more detailed information on accommodation options on the Inglés, click here for our Inglés/Mar Accommodation Spreadsheet (a work in progress!).

Stage 1 – Ferrol to Pontedeume
  • A new donativo albergue has opened in the center of Ferrol: Albergue Ferrol a Donativo. Finally! It’s located at Rua Pardo Baixo, 17, on the fourth floor, and run by Pedro Ráez Baldán.
  • A significant shortcut is possible from the 12th-century San Martín de Xubia, turning right immediately after the old monastery and crossing the pedestrian bridge over the Ría de Ferrol. Just before the Neda station, turn left and then right immediately after, passing under the A-8. Cross the N-642, turn right, and then left immediately after, rejoining the official route here. This trims 6.4km off the day’s walk
Stage 2 – Pontedeume to Betanzos
  • We suggest considering an unmarked coastal approach between Pontedeume and Miño
  • In Mino, Pensión O Cantiño has closed
  • The Albergue de Peregrinos in Betanzos is back to full capacity following some obras. Along with that, a new option has emerged in town: Albergue Santa María del Azogue. Meanwhile, Pensión Cheiño is out of business
Stage 4 – Hospital de Bruma to Sigüeiro
  • There’s a new albergue in O Outeiro / Poulo, very close to Casa Rural Antón Veiras. It’s Albergue de Peregrinos Rectoral de Poulo
  • In Sigüeiro, Albergue O Fogar da Chisca has closed, but Albergue Ultreia et Suseia has taken its place (info here)

Ruta do Mar Updates

Note: For more detailed information on accommodation options on the Mar, click here for our Inglés/Mar Accommodation Spreadsheet (a work in progress!).

  • Reader Fergal warns of the accommodation pinch that can occur in the area surrounding Viveiro during “Resurrection Fest” (a heavy metal music festival, not a Christian affair!) in early July, and also in the area around Ortigueira’s Celtic Music Festival later in the month. Check the calendar for these and consider modifying your plans accordingly–or prepare to camp
  • Newer hostel in Viveiro, and a wonderful resource for pilgrims: Oli Vita Hostel
  • A pair of closures: Hostal O Norte in Foz, Hotel Rural Anatur in Cervo

Via Podiensis Updates

The complete list of updates for the second printing (available now) is also accessible in this linked doc, with the most salient developments listed below. (Most everything else is price changes, which is important but perhaps less crucial to track. Just assume everything got a little more expensive!) Newer updates for 2025 are bolded below

Note: For more detailed information on accommodation options and services on the Via Podiensis, click here for our Via Podiensis Accommodations and Services spreadsheets! This includes many, many more accommodations than we can fit in the book, including a number of new spots opened up in 2024.

  • Page 140 – The Via Podiensis officially goes into Montcuq now! The route has changed between Montcuq and Rouillac, sliding a little over to the west as a consequence of some trail damage on the old route. While it’s a little longer, it’s basically in line with what you were actually going to walk if you made the small detour into Montcuq (as you should!)

  • *Page 142 – Reports indicate that the routing out of Montcuq continues to be in flux following last year’s storms. Check the waymarks carefully

The next section, by contrast, is primarily unpaved, descending and then crossing another wooded ridge to reach Malause (2.9km). Cross the Pont de Quinquil over the Bidouze River, then turn right on D933 (0.7km), taking care when crossing the busy highway.
